PSA2011 celebrates 30+ years of American Nuclear Society (ANS) Topical meetings on Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA).  The ANS Nuclear Installations Safety Division (NISD) and a local chapter of the ANS sponsor the PSA Topical Meeting.  In addition, Nuclear Societies in Europe, Americas and Asia typically are cosponsors.

Newport Beach, CA hosted the first PSA Topical Meeting in May 1978 with about 325 people in attendance and 100 papers presented.  The conference titled Probabilistic Analysis of Nuclear Reactor Safety had Dave Okrent (UCLA and ACRS) as the Technical Program Chair.  Some of the original attendees are still active in PSA.  NISD has hosted PSA meetings every 2 to 4 years in cities around the USA except for the 1987 meeting in Zurich, CH. In particular, the following cities have hosted:

Newport Beach, CA
Port Chester, NY
San Francisco, CA
Zurich, Switzerland
Pittsburgh, PA
Clearwater Beach, FL
Park City, UT
Washington, D.C.
Detroit, MI
San Francisco, CA.
Knoxville, TN
Wilmington, NC

Exploring David Okrent’s 1978 questions highlights the advances in PSA technology during the past 30 years.  PSA2011 celebrates those individuals who through insight and individual dedication have made the PSA technology and Topical Meetings very successful.
